In Australia, every 9 minutes an individual suffers from a stroke — this can lead to debilitating disability and even death. With your help we can improve treatments and outcomes for patients.
Endovascular Clot Retrieval (ECR) is a ground-breaking procedure that was pioneered within the Northern Sydney Local Health District.
ECR is used with patients whose stroke has been caused by a blood clot blocking a brain artery. Usually, these types of strokes would lead to severe disability or death. ECR is an urgent procedure that involves using the latest imaging technology to guide a tiny tube through the body and into the brain. A stent or suction device then captures the clot and removes it. This procedure is a game-changer and not only saves lives but can also prevent the debilitating disability that can follow a stroke.
In 70% of eligible stroke patients Endovascular Clot Retrieval can restore independence.
When a patient is diagnosed with a stroke, timely treatment is needed. This is complicated by the fact that ECR treatments must happen in a specialised operating theatre – an angio-suite. These operating theatres are often in high demand and we are seeing an ever-increasing need for this type of stroke treatment. In order to extend our service and ensure all of our patients receive the immediate treatment they require – we need your help.
With your support, we will be able to create two new angio-suites. This will give our patients the timely access to Endovascular Clot Retrieval that they deserve.
